Building Fast Excel Spreadsheet (Good vs Bad practices)

Hi all,

I’m please to let you know that we have added a new spreadsheet to the TM1 handson data. You can download this data from any handson manual. Just download one handson manual (Arc part 1, Arc part 2, Arc part 3, Slice part 1, Slice part 2 or PowerConnect).

Inside one of these manuals, you’ll find the URL to download TM1 objects. The same TM1 objects are used across all hands-on manuals.

Once set up, you’ll find the new spreadsheet called BPV Slice.xlsx

In the spreadsheet you’ll find 3 groups of 2 tabs to show some example of bad vs good practice:

  • 1.1 and 1.2 to show difference between DBRs and DBRWs
  • 2.1 and 2.2 is DBRA vs DBRW
  • 3.1 and 3.2 is showing calculations in DBRW vs calculation in TM1

After refreshing one tab at a time, you can see in the Slice logs how long it takes. For example tab 1.1 with DBRs takes 126 seconds to refresh whereas 1.2 which is the same tab but with DBRW takes 2 seconds:

This spreadsheet is a great example of the impact that good practices have on the refresh time of an Excel spreadsheet compared to bad practices.

Cheers,

Vincent
